Update: Manga+Press 2.7 RC1, WordPress 3.1.3 and WP 3.2

Sometimes, I can almost curse myself for having a job. It generally means that all of my favorite projects go wanting because I’m too busy working :\ Ah well. Anyway, I’ve done some quick testing and I will say — tentatively — that Manga+Press 2.7 RC1 does work with both WordPress 3.1.3 and the release candidate of WordPress 3.2. At this point, I’m pretty much close to a final release but the only thing that’s holding things up are the additional child-themes I had planned for the plugin. At this point, I don’t know when I’ll have those ready but I don’t want to hold up the release of M+P 2.7 either.

Either way, I’m hoping to have 2.7 released by the end of this month.

Manga+Press 2.7 RC 1

The first release candidate of Manga+Press 2.7 has been released. You can download it from Google Code here. Most of the bugs and the update issue have been fixed from the beta version. However, I would still advise caution when using on a live site.

Few things left todo on 2.7 before it can released in full:

~~Work on upgrade functionality (which is why I’m am strongly cautioning anyone running 2.6.2 live not to upgrade).~~
Build child themes.
~~New screenshots for WordPress Repository.~~
~~Check uninstall functionality.~~
~~Multi-language support. Update POT files, and Spanish language support. (Might have to wait until 2.7.1)~~

Release: Manga+Press 2.7 Beta

The beta version of Manga+Press 2.7 has been released. You can download it from Google Code here. If you’re running 2.6.2, I do not recommend that you upgrade to this version right away. If you have a test installation that you wouldn’t mind breaking, then go ahead and download it. I could use some help in my bug-hunt

Manga+Press 2.7

Yeah, you’re looking at that right. I said 2.7. It’s an intermediate step between 2.6 and 3.0. I’ve been working rather furiously on it since last week. I’m hoping to have it out for beta by this weekend or next weekend. If you’re interested, you can watch my progress by watching the number of commits I make to Google Code each week. Heh, I guess that was something I forgot to mention: Manga+Press is now hosted on Google Code.

I’ve started preliminary development of Manga+Press 2.7, more as a means of playing with the custom post type features in WordPress 3.0. One thing I will say is this: with WordPress 3.0, Manga+Press will become exactly what I had originally wanted it to be when I first had the concept two years ago. The custom taxonomy feature is exactly what I am going to need to make Manga+Press support multiple comics — which was originally what Manga+Press was supposed to do. Somehow, I could never get that feature to work properly.

The problem is Manga+Press is going to have to be re-written entirely for 3.0, and I have to figure out a way of maintaining some backwards compatibility.

Yes, Manga+Press 2.7 will definitely have to be rewritten for WordPress 3.0. The custom post types and taxonomies are going to play a powerful role in 2.7, and now that I’m thinking about it, custom post types will play a part in the companion plug-in called CharacterWiki. Or, CharacterWiki may become a part of Manga+Press 2.7.

Something else I’m going to have consider are upgrade paths. How do I maintain backwards compatibility for users who are upgrading from older versions of Manga+Press?
